As an important part of the flexible packaging industry, testing the performance of plastic films is a necessary step in order to adapt them to the needs of packaging materials. Amongst other things, heat shrinkage performance testing relates to the fact that plastic film does not change in size when subjected to heat, etc., that the surface does not crumple, that the packaging material does not deform, etc.

The heat shrinkage of plastic film is related to the shape and dimensional accuracy of the product and has an important impact on the aesthetics of flexible packaging. An appropriate thermal shrinkage rate allows for compact packaging, in particular a uniform longitudinal and transverse shrinkage rate allows for a tighter and more evenly wrapped film, preventing unbalanced shrinkage from creasing the packaging cover. Film shrinkage is defined as the rate of change in film size under certain temperature conditions and over time.

There are various methods of testing the heat shrinkage of film in the industry, among them, standards such as ASTM D2732 for free linear heat shrinkage of plastic films and sheets are tested by heating the film in a liquid medium, placing the film in a free shrinkage state in a liquid bath at a set temperature for a period of time, removing it and then measuring the change in size, testing, etc.

Testing principle

The apparatus controls the temperature of the heating oil in the heating bath, the specimen is cut to a certain size, placed in the heating bath in the middle of a certain period of time, removed after reaching the time, cooled to room temperature, the size of the specimen is measured and the thermal shrinkage rate is calculated.
