The pre-processed sample is fixed in the middle of the test chamber, dividing the chamber into high-humidity and low-humidity sides. Humidified nitrogen flows on one side of the film, and dry nitrogen (carrier gas) flows at a fixed rate on the other side. Due to the humidity gradient, water vapor permeates from the high-humidity side to the low-humidity side.
